Social security contribution
We examine every contract to see whether it involves a mandatory obligation to pay social security contributions or is exempt from such contributions. The obligation to pay social security contributions normally depends on the type and duration of the internship and/or when it is undertaken. For example, internships that are specified as mandatory for a course of study or examination are exempt from social security contributions.
This exemption does not apply, however, to pharmacy students during their “practical year” or to internships classified as a “Volontariat”. In the case of optional internships and students writing a dissertation for their bachelor's degree or a diploma or master thesis, the social security position is examined on a case-by-case basis. If your internship is not exempt from social security contributions, you must register with a statutory health insurer in Germany, even if you have health insurance in a different country. Please contact your preferred health insurer as soon as possible to discuss details.
If you have private health insurance, you must provide evidence of exemption from the statutory health insurance system in Germany. Such exemption is not applicable if your internship is subject to mandatory social security contributions. In this case, you must register with a statutory health insurer.
Please note: If you are required to pay social security contributions, you will also accrue pension entitlements.
Accident insurance
You are insured against accidents in the workplace and while traveling to and from your workplace. Insurance cover starts on your first contractual working day and is not dependent on the length of your contract or level of remuneration.
